What the Board Is

The AwakeLiposuction.us Medical Review Board is the organizational entity responsible for the clinical accuracy of content on this site. It is not a single named individual and it is not a public roster — it is a review process organized around three subject areas, each governed by explicit standards, and each engaged with qualified consultants who check pages before publication.

Where our structured data credits a page's reviewer, the reviewer is the Board itself as an organization, not an invented person. Where a page carries the visible "Medically reviewed" label at the top, it means the page has been through the review process described below within the last 12 months.

The Three Review Areas

Lipedema and awake liposuction span three genuinely different fields of clinical expertise. Reviewing them all under one general "medical reviewer" would collapse distinctions that matter for patients, so the Board is organized around three areas instead:

Board Structure

  • Area 1 — Condition, diagnosis & differential diagnosis. Covers how lipedema is recognized, how it is told apart from cellulite, lymphedema, and ordinary weight gain, and how the condition is formally evaluated. Held to the standards expected of a phlebologist, vascular specialist, or lipedema-experienced physician.
  • Area 2 — Conservative care. Covers compression, manual lymphatic drainage, movement, pacing, and pain management — the non-surgical care most lipedema patients rely on day to day. Held to the standards expected of a Certified Lymphedema Therapist (CLT) or physical therapist experienced in lipedema.
  • Area 3 — Surgery & anesthesia. Covers surgical treatment options, lymph-sparing and tumescent technique, sedation depth, and anesthesia safety. Held to the standards expected of a board-certified plastic surgeon with lipedema experience, with anesthesia-experienced physician input where relevant.

Each area has its own reviewers, its own source hierarchy, and its own re-review schedule. A surgery-and-anesthesia reviewer does not sign off on a conservative-care page and vice versa. Full details of the review process itself are on our editorial standards page.

Standards Each Reviewer Is Held To

Whoever the Board engages for a given review area is expected to meet the following, verified before any content in that area is published:

  1. Verifiable credentials in the area. Board certification or an equivalent recognized certification appropriate to the area — for example, Lymphology Association of North America (LANA) certification for the conservative-care area, or board certification in plastic surgery for the surgery area.
  2. Active or recently-active clinical practice in a setting relevant to the review area.
  3. No undisclosed financial relationship with any clinic, surgeon, hospital, medical-tourism operator, product, or device that appears anywhere on this site.
  4. Willingness to substantively edit. Reviewers who wave content through are not useful to readers. Comments, corrections, and rewrites are expected and welcomed.
  5. Familiarity with the specific literature on lipedema. General expertise in an adjacent field is not enough — lipedema is chronically under-recognized precisely because it sits at the seam of several specialties.

What "Medically Reviewed" Means on This Site

When a page carries the "Medically reviewed" label at the top and a "Last reviewed" date, all of the following are true:

  1. The page was drafted by our editorial team from peer-reviewed sources and standard-of-care consensus documents (see source policy), such as US lipedema standard-of-care guidance.1
  2. A reviewer engaged for the page's subject area checked the content for factual accuracy, appropriate representation of the evidence, correct characterization of risks and limitations, and appropriate caveats.
  3. Corrections raised in review were implemented before the page went out.
  4. The page's "Last reviewed" date reflects the actual date of that review — not the date the page was first drafted.

What the label does not mean:

  • That the content is medical advice for any individual reader, or a substitute for evaluation by a clinician.
  • That the reviewer or the Board endorses any specific surgeon, clinic, hospital, or product.
  • That the reviewer or the Board has any financial interest in this site or in anything it discusses.

Why We Don't Publish Individual Reviewer Profiles

This is a deliberate editorial choice. Naming an individual clinician on a public page implies personal endorsement of every claim, every phrasing, and every future edit on that page. In practice, review is a collaborative editorial process — reviewers rotate, availability changes, and pages are re-checked over time. We would rather credit the review to the Board as an organization, held to the published standards above, than pin every claim to one person's public reputation.

This also means we do not invent reviewer profiles. On some sites, a photographed reviewer with an impressive-looking title is not the person who actually read the page. We consider that practice a form of authority-laundering and do not do it. The reviewer, in our structured data and on this page, is the AwakeLiposuction.us Medical Review Board. That is the entity accountable for the review.

Re-Review & Freshness

  • Every reviewed page is scheduled for re-review at least every 12 months. The "Last reviewed" date on each page reflects the most recent completed re-review.
  • Substantive updates — adding a section, changing a risk statement, revising a treatment description — trigger a fresh review cycle and a new date.
  • New evidence that would change a patient-relevant conclusion triggers re-review outside the normal schedule.
  • Minor edits (broken-link fixes, typos, layout adjustments) do not change the "Last reviewed" date.

Conflicts of Interest

Board reviewers have no financial interest in AwakeLiposuction.us or its operator, in any clinic, surgeon, hospital, or medical-tourism company mentioned on the site, or in any product or device mentioned on the site. Any potential conflict is either disclosed at the point it arises, or the reviewer recuses from the affected content and a different qualified reviewer covers it. Corrections & Contact

If you believe a page contains a clinical inaccuracy, or you have a peer-reviewed source that would improve one, we want to hear from you. Substantive corrections are made openly and dated, per our corrections policy.
